Reader of the Month: “Being Small”

Oh, my favorite Petite Pineapple. Where to begin? I don’t think it merely comprehendable how long exactly I’ve been waiting to press that little blue ‘Publish’ button on the upper-right-hand-corner of my screen. The Petite Pineapple and I have been best-friends since the summer before kindergarten. I know I’ve told this story before, but it couldn’t be more true to the people we still are today. Basically, we were at a before kindergarten meet-and-greet, and we discovered that we were both wearing the same headband. It was chocolaty brown, embellished with pink and white daisies- a real hit for Target’s 2008 devoted flock of incoming kindergarten girls. After that, we were inseparable. At the end of our first play date, post Barbie playing, High School Musical binging and Goldfish devouring, I promptly ran up to our moms and declared that we were best friends. And, the rest is history. Many things amaze about The Petite Pineapple, but her natural confidence is hands down what inspires most. I invite you to read the article she has written for April’s Reader of the Month, and I can guarantee that you will finish feeling just as empowered as well as impressed at her determination, excellent writing ability, and perseverance, as I was. Petite Pineapple, I could not be more proud to call you my best friend!

XOXO,

The Legally Brunette

Being Small

By: TPP

Small:

adjective

of a size that is less than normal or usual.

“the room was small and quiet”

Hmm. Being Small. I am petite but that doesn’t stop me from doing what I love. Sure I’m not going to be a famous NBA player but I could do something like that if I choose to. Just because I am small doesn’t mean I am weak. I do normal things that tall people do. I make breakfast and go to school. But I always win hide and go seek. It’s one of my specialties. I can’t reach my favorite book on the shelf but I make the best scones. I like being petite though. I have been small my whole life. People always say: “She’s so small” but I don’t have to be constantly reminded. I’m still growing you know! I am not the only one in my grade that is small. There’s only a few but still. Some of their friends joke around calling them ‘midgets.’ I was even called a ‘midget’ once. I was greatly offended. I watched a show about little people that were being called ‘midgets’, they hated being called that. It’s a term of disrespect. The definition is:

Midget:

noun-offensive

an extremely or unusually small person.

“the inhabitants must have been midgets”

It’s like saying dwarf, halfling or shrimp. Those were the other synonyms that came up. Pretty horrible right? Who wants to be called shrimp or halfling? What does that even mean! I forbid anyone to use these offensive terms. I am small because of my DNA. I can’t help it but I am perfectly fine with being petite. If people can’t see that small people are normal too, then they are fools. Anyways, I like being called petite, if you have to describe me, simply use petite. But I am not a definition like the ones I listed above. Being small just makes me, me! It’s my individuality. That’s what makes me special from the rest. I have a personality, a home, a family and a life too. I’m kind, creative and perseverent. I am completely normal. I am healthy and happy. Think, if the whole world was 6 feet tall, there would be less individuality. Race, religion and heritage also make up diversity but size is important too. Everyone comes in different shapes and sizes. But, good things come in small packages. And as my good friend Shakespeare once said, “And though she be but little, she is fierce.”
